What To Expect From CPC Training

Posted on 22nd July 2013 By Charlotte McGhie

Change is afoot for HGV drivers as of September 2014 when the CPC (The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) will be introduced across Europe for all drivers of who operate vehicles that exceed 3.5 tonnes in weight or buses that exceed 9 seats. CPC training has been introduced to maintain safety standards on the roads throughout the continent, it begins with 4 initial tests which are followed by 35 hours of periodic training to be undertaken within 5 years.

The Driver CPC Initial Qualification

The 4 initial tests which all need to be passed in order to qualify for a driver CPC are split into: theory test (covering multiple choice and hazard perception), CPC case studies test, driving ability test and CPC practical demonstration test. There is some flexibility regarding the order in which you take the tests however you must pass the theory test before you can take the driving ability and you must pass the case studies test before you can take the practical demonstration.

What Are ‘Acquired Rights’?

You could have acquired rights if you are already working as a professional HGV driver as your experience may be counted instead of the initial qualification. You will have acquired rights if you:

are a lorry driver who received a vocational licence (C, C1, C+E and C1+E) before 10. 09. 2009
are a bus or coach driver who received a vocational licence (D, D1, D+E and D1+E) before 10.09.08

Periodic Training

Both new and existing drivers must complete 35 hours of periodic training within 5 years of acquiring the initial qualification, failure to complete the training results in the CPC being invalidated. The training can take place at any point within the 5 years and will continue every subsequent 5 years as long as the licence is being used professionally.
