Planning An Accident Free Future

Posted on 20th September 2013 By Charlotte McGhie

Volkswagen are taking strides to secure a future where accidents are a thing of the past with its new Vision Zero safety initiative. The main purpose of Vision Zero is to decipher the causes of traffic accidents in order to develop new driver assistance systems to combat them.

‘Safety sells’ has been a predominant theme of the automotive industry for decades resulting in a present where cars come equipped with air bags, stability and traction control and more, safety is our number one concern when we enter our vehicles but there is always more that can be done.

The Vision Zero initiative aims to explore the major causes of traffic accidents and fatalities in order to create assistance systems that improve vehicle perception of surroundings and traffic events. Ideally the systems will aid the driver in maneuvering challenging situations in order to improve the safety of traffic.

Some key features of the Vision Zero initiative include:
• Pedestrian Detection – Aiding the driver by initiating emergency breaking if they do not react in sufficient time.
• Parking Assistance – Automatic parking to assist entering and exiting narrow spaces via a smartphone.
• Steering Control – Automatic navigation through road construction zones and steering control in the case of a medical emergency and systems to bring the vehicle to a complete stop without the driver stepping on the breaks.
