HGV License & Tax Information

Posted on 13th August 2012 By Charlotte Haye

If you’ve chosen your new career, you’ve read up and decided, you’ve gotten all the facts together and you’re all ready to get started on your quest to be one with the road, then it’s likely you’re going to want to start to get familiar with the nitty-gritty, the foundations that make up the HGV driving industries. Here at Surrey and Hampshire HGV Training, if you’re looking for any type of HGV training in London or the surrounding area, we have the tools you need! To get you started, here’s a brief overview of two important things to consider when venturing out into the world of HGV driving – the license, and how you’ll be getting it, and the tax.

First of all, getting a license is, of course, your first foray into the industry, your entry point and the first port of call you should start with. If you’ve ever glanced over HGV license information, you may have become lost in a flurry of categories and weights and classes, but whilst it certainly differs from a standard license, it isn’t as complicated as it looks.

Category C1 – Allows a vehicle with a maximum authorized mass of between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, with a trailer up to 750 kilograms to be driven.

Category C1+ E – Allows for the same constraints as C1, only the trailer may exceed 750Kg, as long as it does not exceed the un-laden mass of the vehicle.

Category C – Allows the holder to drive any rigid goods vehicle weighing over 3.5 tonnes with a trailer up to 750Kg

Category C+E – The Class 1 license allows the holder to drive a vehicle weighing over 3.5 tonnes, with over 750Kg for the trailer.

It’s worth knowing which of these you’ll need to be aiming for in the long term as well as the short term, for future jobs and vehicles you may need to drive!

There are separate ways to tax a HGV without being posted a reminder, to that of a car or similar vehicle.

V85 HGV License Application – This form must be used to TAX the heavy goods vehicle, and should be done so on the fifth day of the month, should your tax run out at the end of that month.
