{"id":831,"date":"2012-05-14T17:32:13","date_gmt":"2012-05-14T15:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.surreyandhampshirehgvtraining.co.uk\/news\/?p=223"},"modified":"2012-05-14T17:32:13","modified_gmt":"2012-05-14T15:32:13","slug":"more-than-half-of-cyclists-admit-to-jumping-red-lights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.surreyandhampshirehgvtraining.co.uk\/index.php\/more-than-half-of-cyclists-admit-to-jumping-red-lights\/","title":{"rendered":"More than half of cyclists admit to jumping red lights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than half of cyclists jump red lights, according to a survey by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iam.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute of Advanced Motorists<\/a> (IAM).<\/p>\n<p>Some 57% of 1,600 cyclists surveyed by the IAM admitted to jumping red lights, while 38% claimed it was \u201csafer\u201d to do so, as it put them ahead of other traffic.<\/p>\n<p>However 54% say that cyclists needed to improve their behaviour and stick to the Highway Code.<\/p>\n<p>IAM chief executive Simon Best says: \u201cThe police need to enforce the law as strongly when cyclists put themselves and others at risk by jumping the lights, as they do for drivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fta.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freight Transport Association<\/a> there were 13 fatal collisions between LGVs and cyclists in London alone during 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Its Cycling Code can be read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fta.co.uk\/export\/sites\/fta\/_galleries\/downloads\/cycling\/fta_cycling_code.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than half of cyclists jump red lights, according to a survey by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).
