{"id":1225,"date":"2013-08-28T10:18:40","date_gmt":"2013-08-28T10:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.surreyandhampshirehgvtraining.co.uk\/?p=1225"},"modified":"2017-08-30T13:25:56","modified_gmt":"2017-08-30T13:25:56","slug":"bus-coach-drivers-acquired-rights-warned-theres-less-month-finish-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.surreyandhampshirehgvtraining.co.uk\/index.php\/bus-coach-drivers-acquired-rights-warned-theres-less-month-finish-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Bus and coach drivers with \u2018acquired rights\u2019 are being warned that there\u2019s less than a month to finish their training."},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Bus and coach drivers with \u2018acquired rights\u2019 are being warned that there\u2019s less than a month to finish their training.<\/h3>\n<div>Posted on 28 Aug 2013 by Admin<\/div>\n<p>The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (<abbr title=\"Certificate of Professional Competence\">CPC<\/abbr>) was introduced in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2008 for bus and coach drivers<\/li>\n<li>2009 for lorry drivers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>New drivers who drive for a living had to start taking the Driver\u00a0<abbr title=\"Certificate of Professional Competence\">CPC<\/abbr>\u00a0initial qualification from then.<\/p>\n<p>Existing drivers were given \u2018acquired rights\u2019 which took their previous experience into account.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"september-training-deadline\">September training deadline<\/h2>\n<p>By law, all professional drivers must do 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years.<\/p>\n<p>You have until 10 September 2013 to finish your training if you\u2019re a bus or coach driver with acquired rights.<\/p>\n<p>You risk being fined and even losing your livelihood if you don\u2019t complete your training by the deadline.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Check your Driver\u00a0<abbr title=\"Certificate of Professional Competence\">CPC<\/abbr>\u00a0periodic training hours<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Lorry drivers with acquired rights now have less than 13 months to finish their training.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"drivers-and-operators-must-be-aware-of-deadlines\">Drivers and operators must be aware of deadlines<\/h2>\n<p>Alastair Peoples,\u00a0<abbr title=\"Driving Standards Agency\">DSA<\/abbr>\u00a0and\u00a0<abbr title=\"Vehicle and Operator Services Agency\">VOSA<\/abbr>\u00a0Chief Executive, said: We know that the majority of these drivers have completed, or are on track to complete, their first cycle of training in time. Periodic training keeps drivers\u2019 skills up to date, helps save money through improved fuel efficiency and reduced accidents, and contributes to safer roads in Britain.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Vehicle and Operator Services Agency\">VOSA<\/abbr>\u00a0officers already routinely check the Driver\u00a0<abbr title=\"Certificate of Professional Competence\">CPC<\/abbr>\u00a0status of professional drivers. After the deadlines, they can also check whether \u2018acquired rights\u2019 drivers have completed their training or are driving illegally. Not being aware of Driver\u00a0<abbr title=\"Certificate of Professional Competence\">CPC<\/abbr>\u00a0is not an excuse for drivers or operators.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline for bus and coach drivers with acquired rights is 10 September 2013 and for lorry drivers with acquired rights it\u2019s 10 September 2014<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"get-qualified-and-dont-risk-your-livelihood\">\u201cGet qualified and don\u2019t risk your livelihood\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>The Office of the Traffic Commissioner has also repeated that operators must be aware of their drivers\u2019 training hours and deadlines to avoid penalties.<\/p>\n<p>Joan Aitken, lead Traffic Commissioner on Driver\u00a0<abbr title=\"Certificate of Professional Competence\">CPC<\/abbr>, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The bus and coach industry is now entering the most critical phase of this training, with only one month to go before the deadline expires. Drivers who have completed the required hours and worked hard to achieve the driver qualification card (<abbr title=\"driver qualification card\">DQC<\/abbr>) can continue to provide vital services for the public after 9 September 2013.<\/p>\n<p>But those who have yet to finish the training \u2013 and drivers who have not recorded any hours \u2013 must make sure they are qualified by the deadline if they want to carry on working in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic commissioners have made it clear that drivers and operators will be brought to their attention when there are offences of driving without a\u00a0<abbr title=\"driver qualification card\">DQC<\/abbr>\u00a0or failing to produce it. This could result in driver and O licence sanctions.
