{"id":1155,"date":"2013-05-09T10:23:39","date_gmt":"2013-05-09T10:23:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.surreyandhampshirehgvtraining.co.uk\/?p=1155"},"modified":"2017-10-17T15:18:23","modified_gmt":"2017-10-17T15:18:23","slug":"police-commissioner-vows-fight-better-deal-haulage-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.surreyandhampshirehgvtraining.co.uk\/index.php\/police-commissioner-vows-fight-better-deal-haulage-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Police commissioner vows to fight for a better deal for haulage industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Suffolk police and crime commissioner (PCC) has vowed to take on the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.highways.gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Highways Agency<\/a>\u00a0(HA) to get a better deal for hauliers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.suffolk-pcc.gov.uk\/about-us\/whos-who\/tim-passmore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Passmore<\/a>, one of 41 PCCs elected in\u00a0 November 2012 to scrutinise police forces and set local crime-fighting priorities, told\u00a0<em>CM<\/em>\u00a0the HA in East Anglia needed to up its game on road maintenance, its handling of traffic problems and its response to accidents.<\/p>\n<p>Passmore also said hauliers get a poor return for the amount of money the industry pays through taxes to fund the road network.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/adserver.adtech.de\/?adlink|289|1154246|0|277|AdId=-8;BnId=0;itime=0;key=key1+key2+key3+key4;sub1=[subst];\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aka-cdn.adtech.de\/images\/AT277_2x2.gif\" alt=\"AdTech Ad\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>He said: \u201cI\u2019ve already had a meeting with the HA and told the regional director [for the East of England] that it needs to start shaping up and thinking about the haulage industry.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone has to speak up for the haulage industry \u2013 look at the amount it pays in duty and excise. I\u2019ve told the HA it should sort out [the problems].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Passmore added that some roads in the region are in a \u201cstate of disrepair\u201d, which is causing damage to tyres. He also thinks the HA should do more to minimise disruption to road users caused by accidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need a system of local response teams to clear up incidents and pay them a retainer so they can get there quickly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Passmore said that he was still waiting for a response from the HA, but vowed to not let the issue drop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concerns noted<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In response, an HA spokeswoman said: &#8220;We are committed to providing safe and reliable journeys for all road users, including hauliers, in East Anglia. We have a robust maintenance programme to keep our network safe and serviceable and reduce the need for emergency maintenance closures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr Passmore has expressed his concerns to us about the A14\u00a0 around Ipswich and we have discussed with him how we will be implementing improvements following completion of a study into the causes of recent incidents. All improvements will be carefully planned to minimise disruption.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We remain committed to playing our part in improving the response to incidents; we will look further at how we can work with the police and other partners to ensure this happens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>PCCs are elected for four-year terms and have recently published plans detailing how they will tackle local crime priorities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Suffolk police and crime commissioner (PCC) has vowed to take on the\u00a0Highways Agency\u00a0(HA) to get a better deal for hauliers.
